Detailed Review

The Bowflex Ultimate 2 gives you pretty much everything you need for a total body workout. Although it isn't cheap and requires a fair amount of space, it is a well built and versatile machine. This power rod-based gym is built around a horizontal bench. The way the rods work is that they are hooked to a cable pulley system. You can hook one, two, three, four or all of the power rods to the cable pulley system and go from as little as 5 pounds all the way up to either 301 or the upgraded resistance. If you are experienced in weight training you will probably like the set-up of this unit because it structured much like the adjustable benches that you would expect to see in many fitness clubs and other multi gyms. Although the Bowflex Ultimate 2 does fold up and rolls on wheels for storage, it does take up quite a bit o space. You will need a workout area of 9'4" X 6'6" for this home gym, along with plenty of additional space to store its assorted attachments. The minimum amount of required ceiling space is 7'4". The unit is a heavy machine that even when folded still measures 44" X 46"X. One of the most common complaints about the Bowflex Ultimate 2 is that it is very time consuming to assemble. If you are working alone it could take you anywhere from 5 to 8 hours to assemble depending on how handy you are. So it's probably a good idea to get a friend to help with assembly.

The Ultimate 2 includes:

  • A No-Change Cable Pulley System
  • 310 lbs of Power Rod® Resistance (upgradeable to 410 lbs/186 kg)
  • Lat Tower with Angled Lat Bar
  • Leg Extension/Leg Curl Attachment
  • Preacher Curl Attachment (although the preacher curl appears to limit the full range of motion slightly)
  • Built-In Rowing Machine allowing you to add cardio to your weight training routine)
  • Integrated Squat Station (allows for a safe, comfortable squat workout with no spotter required)
  • 5-way Hand-Grip / Ankle Cuffs
  • Workout DVD including an Incredible 20-minute Exercise Routine Designed for the Bowflex Ultimate 2 Home Gym
  • Owner’s Manual
  • Quick Reference Fitness Poster with Detailed Instructions for Each Exercise

    Accessories:

  • Bowflex Ultimate 2 Ab Crunch Attachment – Challenge your abs for a stronger core
  • Bowflex Ultimate 2 Accessory Rack – Organize your workspace
  • Bowflex Machine Mat – Protect floors and add stability
  • 410 lb Power Rod Upgrade – Add 100 lbs extra resistance
  • Bowflex Owners Club Membership – Get your own online personal trainer
  • Bowflex Multi-Point Foot Harness - Isolate lower body muscles for a complete workout
  • Bowflex Power Rod Rejuvenator - Preserve weight resistance calibration of Power Rod units

One nice feature that can shorten the time it takes to get through your workout is that the Ultimate 2 doesn't require you to change cables in order to switch from one exercise to another; you simply adjust the resistance levels and keep exercising. This makes for faster workouts -- maybe not as fast as shifting a pin in a weight stack, but certainly much faster than adjusting free weights.

The Ultimate 2 offers over 95 different exercises. While many of these exercises are variations of the same movement and you don't really need that many exercises for a complete workout, the variety provided by this unit is enough to keep your workouts varied and interesting. The maximum resistance level is 310 pounds, though this can be upgraded to 410 pounds for $99. The Bowflex Ultimate 2 is expensive, but if you have the budget and the floor space to accommodate it, it can be a highly effective home fitness product.
